| Ray
Hedger was born in Swindon, Wiltshire in 1944
and studied at the Cheltenham College of Art and
the Central School of Art, London. Apart from
a few years setting up a community studio for
Swindon Council and a time as Arts and Crafts
Director for the US Air Force, Ray has drawn and
painted uninterrupted since the age of five. Throughout
his career, he has pursued a singular vision,
working intensely over the last decade or so from
landscape to the female form, without regard for
much that is fashionable in present art activity.
‘My concerns are to do with
light, colour and those emotions and memories
triggered by visual responses. I work directly
through drawing, often working on an image several
times, doing several versions until it reflects
back the initial vision that made me stop and
draw. Often memory will add or change things.
I wish to create paintings as
objects of contemplation, reflecting the light,
emotion, history and beauty of the landscape.
Essentially, I am after a reality of the human
mind and spirit which I regard as the function
of abstraction in art.’
Ray Hedger is dedicated to encouraging
the appreciation of art and its practice and gives
regular tuition at Cirencester College and in
his studio in the Cotswolds, as well as numerous
talks and demonstrations throughout the country.
